What advantage does keeping balcony doors locked even on higher floors give to overall security?

Higher floors feel safe because “who will climb this high?” But balcony doors are still entry points, especially in buildings where balconies are connected, ledges are wide, or scaffolding is present for repairs.

Keeping balcony doors locked when not in use adds one more layer an intruder would have to get through. It also protects kids from wandering out unsupervised and leaning dangerously over railings.

You don’t have to live in fear, just treat balcony doors with the same respect as the main door. Unlocked doesn’t mean more freedom; sometimes it just means more risk.
